How to do the Fishtail Braid Hairstyle

We all know a familiar feeling that starts when we lay eyes on a glamorous hairstyle, the fishtail braid for example, and instantly get hooked and feel like we want to try it for ourselves. What happens next is we ask ourselves questions about how realistic it is for us to actually recreate what we see. As a result, because we doubt ourselves, we often decide to just stop and move on.

Almost, if not all braided hairstyles look really elaborate and complicated at first glance, thus scaring us off from learning or even trying. We need to look beyond the challenge and take a step towards trying. You’ll be surprised that what seems hard and impossible is actually simpler and doable.

That being said, it’s true that the fishtail braid takes more time and effort to make compared to the more traditional braided hairstyles – for example, rope braid, french braid. However. The end result is worth it! It is absolutely gorgeous! The style has a professional vibe to it that people will think you’re a pro hairstylist for being able to pull it off.

It’s common knowledge among stylists that it is a variation of the versatile french braid with a distinguishable woven appearance. The braid structure is made of 2 main sections instead of 3 like the french and dutch braid. Surprisingly, people find this style easier to make despite its sophisticated design.

We’ve put together a guide to help you add this to your repertoire of hairstyles.

Do-it-yourself: Fishtail braid hairstyle

Preparation: We want a tangle-free, clean and organized hair. Do not shy away from brushing your hair with a comb/hairbrush until it’s soft. Think of it as having a clean station to work with. This will make the process easier and in order.

Step one: Divide the hair

We want to divide the hair into 2 sections. We’re going to work with a left section and a right section.

Step two: Cross the sections

Left Section

  1. Take a small volume of hair (strand) from the left section. It’s best to gather from the outer part of the section.
  2. Cross this small volume of hair you gathered and keep it in between the 2 sections. (Use the right hand to hold it in place.)
  3. Wrap it under the right section and fuse the two. What used to be a strand from the left section is now part of the right section.
  4. Pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the structure.

Right section

  1. Take a small volume of hair (strand) from the right section. It’s best to gather from the outer part of the section.
  2. Cross this small volume of hair you gathered and keep it in between the 2 sections. (Use the left hand to hold it in place.)
  3. Wrap it under the left section and fuse the two. What used to be a strand from the right section is now part of the left section.
  4. Pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the structure.

Keep repeating these steps until you reach the ends of the hair.

Step three: Finish and secure the braid

Leave at least 1 to 2 inches of hair for the hair accessory to be used to secure the braid. Finish by using a tie (small elastic, ribbon, etc) to hold the hair in place.

Congratulations! Now you know how to fishtail braid, all you have to do next is practice, practice, practice, and practice until each and every step feels natural and becomes second nature. You should feel proud of yourself for completing such an advance type of braided hairstyle.
