How to do Rope-Fishtail Braid Combination

When you find yourself unsure which hairstyle to wear, or which two braids you can fuse together. Why not try the Fishtail Braid Combination? You’ll love it!

No one said that you can’t wear two braided hairstyles at the same time. That’s just ill-advised and it limits your creativity. Hairstyling is an art where you can express your inner artist via fixing hair and molding it the way you want it. There are no rules.

This combination of braid is a great way to display your hairstyling prowess. It’s new, fresh, and it delivers a statement about your creativity. Experimenting with different styles and playing around with them is fun. Even more so when you come up with a combination that works.

Do-it-yourself: Fishtail Braid Combination

Preparation: We want a tangle-free, clean and organized hair. Do not shy away from brushing your hair with a comb/hairbrush until it’s soft. Think of it as having a clean station to work with. This will make the process easier and in order.

Part one: Make multiple ponytails

Step one: Create Ponytail #1

Gather a chunk of hair from the crown of the head. Tie and hold it in place with a small elastic. This will be the starting point of our braid structure. Set it aside by clipping it on the crown. (We’ll be working with multiple ponytails for this style.)

Step two: Create Ponytail #2

Again, take a chunk of hair from the side or below the first ponytail. Tie and hold it in place with a small elastic. Make sure to align it with the first one.

Part two: Turn Ponytail#1 to a Fishtail Braid

Step one: Divide the hair

We want to divide the hair into 2 sections. We’re going to work with a left section and a right section.

Step two: Cross the sections

Left Section

  1. Take a small volume of hair (strand) from the left section. It’s best to gather from the outer part of the section.
  2. Cross this small volume of hair you gathered and keep it in between the 2 sections. (Use the right hand to hold it in place.)
  3. Wrap it under the right section and fuse the two. What used to be a strand from the left section is now part of the right section.
  4. Pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the structure.

Right section

  1. Take a small volume of hair (strand) from the right section. It’s best to gather from the outer part of the section.
  2. Cross this small volume of hair you gathered and keep it in between the 2 sections. (Use the left hand to hold it in place.)
  3. Wrap it under the left section and fuse the two. What used to be a strand from the right section is now part of the left section.
  4. Pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the structure.

Keep repeating these steps until you reach the ends of the hair. Set it aside by clipping it on the top of the head with a hairpin clip. This will allow you to work with the second ponytail without interference.

Part three: Turn Ponytail#2 to Rope braid

Step one: Gather the hair

Gather the hair in the back of the head.

Step two: Split into two

Split the hair into two equal sections: the left strand and the right strand.

Step three: Cross the sections

Cross the right strand over the left strand. Repeat until you reach the ends of the hair.

Step four: Finish and secure

Tug/Loosen the strands of the braid to make it look fuller.

Finish by using a tie (small elastic, ribbon, etc) to hold the hair in place.
